CYNTHIA BEASLEY

Anchor, Investigative Reporter

“Excellent example of a hungry reporter staying with a story through all of its developments -- and taking time for research and ensuring fairness as best could be accomplished, given stonewalling, prepared statements and occasional lack of responses,”  judges for the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters.

ABOUT ME

Cynthia Beasley is an award-winning journalist for WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina.

She's known for her tough questions, knack for humanizing stories and dogged pursuit of the truth. Her investigative reporting has made waves.

Her reporting led to legislation that will improve transparency from the SC Department of Transportation after a solutions-based investigation revealed a major road project was years delayed and millions over budget.

Cynthia won a Regional Edward R. Murrow award and was nominated for a Capital Emmy for “Best Continuing News." She won the 1st place award for the same category in the 2021 Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters Contest; breaking a national story about allegations that the country’s largest Evangelical university was covering up rape allegations, potentially violating federal Title IX laws. After her investigation, the Department of Education launched an investigation into the university. The department then levied the largest fine in history against the university for Clery Act violations. Dozens of women sued Liberty University after her reporting. The university president announced they would spend millions of dollars on increased campus security.

Cynthia was nominated for a Southeast Emmy for an investigation that found almost 40% of dogs euthanized at a municipal shelter were killed the same day they entered the shelter, leaving employees questioning if the shelter was violating a state law.

Cynthia uncovered an error in the Department of Motor Vehicles registration system that led to the DMV wrongfully taxing thousands of people. The DMV changed their systems and refunded thousands of dollars because of Cynthia's reporting.

She exposed a school system that did not carry the drug overdose antidote, Naloxone, leading to a near-death; the school system changed its policy after her story. Cynthia has also shined a light on hospitals that turn away rape victims.
